The coastline of Zakynthos is beautiful and variable. You can experience both sandy beaches and fjord like locations throughout the island. Be it by car or by boat you will be able to reach idyllic locations suitable to your needs for a day by the sea.
If sandy beaches are what you’re after, then the southern part of the island which ranges from Agios Sostis to Kalamaki, including the island of Marathonisi, is what you should definitely look at. That part of the island is the primary nesting ground of the Loggerhead Turtle, also known as Caretta – Caretta. The turtles lay their eggs in deep burrows in the hot sand at the top of the beaches. But that not the only place if you’re after sand. Most of the eastern coastline of the island is sandy. Gerakas is one of them, located at the south-eastern tip of the island and is one of the best beaches you can visit. Its sandy shore is riddled with turtle nests and is protected by the National Marine Park. You can also look at Vassilikos, which is a more cosmopolitan area with nice beach bars that feature some of the best Djs from around the world. It is also the place to be if you are a fan of watersports. Moving up north and past Zakynthos town, you can also visit Tsilivi which is another resort that features sandy beaches and beach bars suitable for families that want to experience a more quite resort. Even northern you will find Alykes and Alykanas, still at the eastern coastline and still sandy. A little bit northern you will find beaches like Xigia and Makris Gialos, which are great beaches but not as sandy as you might like as they have quite an amount of pebbles.

For the adventurous type of persons, that wish to experience great diving spots and fjord like beaches then the west is where it’s at. Places like Porto Limnionas which is a beautiful cove tacked away from busy tourist resorts is one of the most beautiful places you will find. There is no beach there so in order to approach the water you need to walk down steep steps formed in the rocks. The refreshing cold waters are a combination of sea currents and underwater streams. Let’s not forget the Shipwreck beach which as it might be a sandy beach it is only accessible by boat so it’s still an adventure. The sea has eaten into the mountain and has created an astounding golden sand beach that features a shipwreck from the 80s the smugglers ship called “Panayiotis” that was abandoned off the coast and was washed ashore and has been there ever since.
These are but some of the amazing beaches you can find around the beautiful island of Zakynthos. For more feel free to search Virtualzakynthos.gr and get a Panoramic 360° tour of Zakynthos’ amazing coastline.
